Live Review: RZA as Bobby Digital feat. Stone Mecca
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Richards on Richards, Vancouver BC
After whetting the crowd’s appetite with a dope DJ set of Wu Tang classics, Stone Mecca took the stage in all their glory to tear through a passionate set of “Futuresoul”, reminiscent of Parliament/Funkadelic, complete with congas, keys, pummeling bass and rotating vocals from four different singers. Initially the audience seemed surprised at the shift from down-tempo Hip Hop to more upbeat funk and soul, but transformed into a sweltering dance floor after the third song or so by the brilliantly intense tunes and smoking hot vocals (and vocalists…).

RZA on Chess, His New Album, and His Favorite Broccoli Recipes
Photo: Marc Morrison / Retna
The RZA returns! And talks to us! After recently launching his online chess site WuChess (and getting stomped by New York Times chess editor Dylan McClain in the process), hip-hop’s alpha nerd has revived his beloved Bobby Digital character for Digi Snacks, his weirdest and most jubilant record yet. The rapper who masterminded Wu-Tang and (arguably) out-funnied "Ghostbustin'-ass" Bill Murray in Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes sat down with a super-psyched Vulture to talk chess, vegetarian cuisine, and his thoughts on Lil Wayne. Bong bong!

RZA, Hans Zimmer collaborating on Vin Diesel soundtrack...
How fresh is this? Wu-Tang Clan magnateThe RZA and celebrated Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King,” “Gladiator,” “The Thin Red Line”) have teamed-up to do the score to the upcoming film, “Babylon A.D.” starring Vin Diesel. “The RZA’s team and Hans Zimmer’s team have combined to create a hybrid kind of score for this movie that’s based in the future. So I think it’s going to be a good vibe for the audience out there, and it’s a good movie anyway – a very thought-provoking movie,” the Wu-Tang Abbot said.
